There are about 500,000 Malaysians currently jobless, according to Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmi Ali, who gave the statistics in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
The top three highest rates of unemployment are:
- Labuan (8.6%)
- Sabah (5.5%)
- Terengganu (4.5%)
Meanwhile, the percentages of unemployment according to age groups are:
- 15 to 24 (10.8%)
- 25 to 34 (2.9%)
- 35 to 44 (1.1%)
- 45 to 54 (1%)
- 55 to 64 (0.4%)
Those who constitute the largest group of job-seekers are diploma holders, followed by SPM holders.
In response to a question from Zahidi Zainul Abidin (BN-Padang Besar) on the number of unemployed Malaysians and long-term measures to reduce it, Azmin said that the government will rectify the issue by identifying market needs, and through re-skilling and up-skilling training.
