We recently published a story highlighting KFC Singapore’s initiative to the save the environment by halting the usage of plastic straws and cup lids. In it, we also posed the question on when it’ll be Malaysia’s turn to do our part for planet Earth. You can read the story here.
Well, between then and now, not much has changed except us being a few hours older and that much closer to the weekend, when we’ll go out to eat with our friends and family and… see restaurants give out plastic straws. Sigh.
But, just because they’re still giving them out, doesn’t mean we can’t say no to them. The good news is, you don’t have to give up using straws because we’re here to tell you where you can get yourselves an environmentally-friendly replacement…
The Hive Bulk Foods
When it comes to using a reusable straw, stainless steel appears to be everyone’s preferred material. It’s not hard to see why, they are durable, stylish, and quite honestly doesn’t make you look like you’re carrying a straw with you everywhere you go.
This particular one from The Hive Bulk Foods is called the SMOOTHIE (not limited to just drinking smoothies) straw. It measures 21.5cm in length and 12mm in diameter, and costs only RM8 per piece. Get it here.
There’s stainless steel straws, then there’s this stainless steel straw. The FinalStraw is collapsible and can be stored in an inconspicuous case that can fit in your pocket or attached to a key ring. The FinalStraw is currently on pre-order (expected delivery in November 2018) and will set you back US$20 (approx. RM80.20) before shipping. It’s a hefty price to pay, but at least people will know you take the environment and sucking seriously.

The Usuk Initiative
Be careful where you point that lest people think you’re pointing a blowpipe at them! With its Muji-esque look and style, these bamboo straws are totally something we wouldn’t mind having. Manufactured by a team of 5 siblings in Sabah, these bamboo straws are toxic-free and come in 10″ (25.4cm) and 8″ (20.5cm) lengths. Worldwide shipment is available although no price has been announced yet for these babies.
