High Court judge Datuk Mohd Sophian Abdul Razak, who is hearing the case against former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, is the younger brother to UMNO Pahang strongman, Mohd Soffi, who’s a five-term assemblyperson in Benta, Pahang, and a four-time state exco member. He’s also the chairperson of the Pahang State Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Committee.
And guess what, Najib also hails from Pahang.
Justice Sophian allowed Najib to be bailed out on RM1 million with two sureties, instead of the RM4 million asked by Attorney-General Tommy Thomas. Justice Sophian also allowed the gag order sought by Najib’s defense, effectively barring media, both digital and newspaper, from discussing the merits of the case. The gag order is being challenged by the Attorney-General, who said that it goes against the right of free speech.
When speaking to reporters after the proceeding, A-G said that it was the first time he heard about the judge and his brother. Many Malaysians are taking to social media to express their disappointment, asking the judge to recuse himself, citing conflict of interests.
The A-G has yet to say anything about the replacement of the judge.
