Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail announced that the government’s proposed EPF scheme for housewives will only cover first wives in an event of a polygamous marriage.
The government proposed to add RM50 for each contribution to the pension scheme. Second, third and/or fourth wives are not qualified for this additional contribution. “According to our religious beliefs, it is the husband’s responsibility to ensure they are financially able to support another wife. Why should the government be responsible for that instead,” she said.
The reason for the government’s contribution is to further secure the future of housewives and their children should the family’s breadwinner be struck by unfortunate incidents. The proposed scheme is Dr Wan Azizah’s brainchild, where 2% will be transferred from a husband’s Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account to the housewife.
Part of Pakatan Harapan’s 100 Day manifesto, the scheme will be brought up in the next Cabinet meeting and is expected to take effect in stages, starting with a voluntary contribution, which will later be made mandatory with amendments to the EPF act and Social Security Organisation (Socso) Act.
