Coffee giant Starbucks has announced that it’ll no longer offer plastic straws at any of its stores worldwide by the year 2020. The company will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws each year by way of redesigning the cups and lids for their cold drinks. Instead, Starbucks will invest in biodegradable “alternative-material straw options”.
Although some observers have compared the straw-less lids to “adult sippy cups”, it will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea and espresso drinks. Frappuccino drinks will be served with the new eco-friendly straws, but customers can request the other cups if they prefer no straw at all.
Starbucks President and CEO Kevin Johnson called the move “a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways”.
Plastic straws often end up in the ocean, where they become hazardous for the aquatic animals like turtles, and contribute to pollution. Research predicts that there will be more plastic than actual fish in the sea by 2050, when measured by weight.
It’s great that big corporations are starting to change their ways to become greener, and hopefully more will follow in Starbucks footsteps after this.
But change can also start from you. Refuse a straw unless absolutely necessary. But if you love sipping on a straw, we got you covered. You can get your eco-friendly straw here, and take it with you everywhere you go! You’re welcome. 😉
