In recent years, Disney has turned some of its classics into live-action masterpieces, including Beauty and the Beast (2017), Cinderella (2015), and Maleficent (2014). Good news, die-hard Disney fans! Mulan is next on the list and production has already begun!
The film will shoot on locations in New Zealand and China. The only problem is, it’ll only open in Malaysian cinemas on 25 March 2020. Yup, still a long way to go.
But after a year-long search around the world, going through thousands of auditions for the cast of Mulan, we think they really nailed it with Liu Yifei.
We mean, the resemblance is uncanny. It’s perfect and all we ever imagined Mulan to be. The movie also stars martial arts legends like Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee, Rosalind Chao and many others!
For those of you that have been living under a rock and have never heard of Mulan, it’s based on the Chinese folk tale of a fearless young woman, who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Huan Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.
We’re already squealing and ready to be taken back to our childhood. Mulan, please don’t disappoint us!
