The Power Of The Internet Causes Petronas To Call Off Its Home Delivery Price Hike!

Sometimes, we don’t realise how much power we actually have on social media.

On Tuesday (30 October), Malaysians were baffled when they found out that the Petronas Home Delivery Gas (GPHD) services would increase in price from 1st November. What puzzled consumers the most was the fact that the increase in price appeared to come without any proper reasoning.

Based on a report by Sinar Harian, Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB) released a circular to all Petronas gas distributors about the price hike.

The new prices mentioned were:

  • RM31 for 12kg gas cylinder
  • RM35 for 14kg gas cylinder

FYI, GPHD’s previous prices were RM26 for the 12kg and RM29.80 for the 14kg… which means that the prices were being increased by at least RM5!

News of the price hike became viral online as netizens shared it with dismay. In fact, it was so viral that on that same day, Putrajaya demanded an explanation from Petronas regarding the price hike.

According to a source that spoke to The Malay Mail, while gas prices remain the same, Putrajaya was concerned about the steep increase in delivery charges. Yes, the RM5 increase that Petronas applied to their prices was just for delivery charge ALONE.

Then, the next day (31 Oct), Petronas released this statement:

All that backlash online forced Petronas to recall the announcement of the price increase!

Good job, everyone!
