Kids, have you ever called the government’s helpline, Talian Kasih, to talk to them about abuse?

Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development reported a spike in calls received by local helplines during the cuti sekolah period.

According to Hannah, the kids are calling the helplines due to boredom and loneliness faced during the school holidays. So, the government has urged that schools, NGOs and parents come up with a healthy cuti sekolah programme to keep the children occupied during the school break.

Speaking of kids and helplines, Hannah also reported that over 26,000 cases of child abuse had been reported since 2013, with 17% of the cases caused by family disputes.

She advised couples yang baru kahwin not to feel pressured by relatives yang suka menyibuk nak tanyabila nak ada anak?”, adding that raising a kid properly is a huge responsibility.

“Becoming a parent is not just about making babies but it is a lifetime of commitment and hard work. Never succumb to peer pressure and don’t be a parent if you’re not fit or if you’re not ready.”

Citing a study conducted by Universiti Sains Malaysia, she says 9% of partnered women in the country have experienced domestic violence, with more than 70% saying their kid had seen or heard the violence being committed in their homes.

If you are a kid in a similar situation or know anyone who might be facing this, do not be afraid to speak to someone or seek help! You can contact the organisations listed below:

Malaysians Are Really Paying Hundreds To Ticket Resellers To Watch “Avengers: Endgame” This Week

The latest instalment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe films is causing Malaysian fans and moviegoers to go above and beyond in order to secure their tickets for opening week.

Image via Box Office Pro

Local cinema websites revealed that the majority of gold class and normal tickets for the first few days of screening are already sold out. Due to this, people are resorting to paying online ticket touters extra just to secure a seat in the cinema.

Ticket touters, obviously ambil kesempatan of this desperation and have reportedly hiked ticket prices up to as high as RM500 for tickets on premiere night! Walao!

Meanwhile, a pair of tickets for an IMAX 3D screening of the film is being sold for RM450, and a 4DX showing in Paradigm Mall, Johor is going for RM200 per ticket. Mahal gile wehh!

FYI, just to put things into perspective, normal prices for cinema tickets range between RM15 and RM40 for regular showings, while 4DX and IMAX are priced at RM50 to RM80.

One day after the tickets went on sale most cinemas only had the first few rows of seats left available – Image via Lowyat

According to the Malaysian Reserve, a local fan paid online ticket touters RM300 for three tickets. Speaking to the publisher, she said she was forced to buy from ticket touters because she tak sempat buy her tickets from the cinema chains before they were sold out.

She also said that she wanted to watch the film during the opening week to avoid the film being ruined for her by seeing spoilers, and on top of that, she also wanted to be one of the first to find out which superheroes survive the film.

“I bought three tickets for RM300 from Mudah.my and even that is not for the first day,

I think it’s quite frustrating that some people just bought tickets earlier only to re-sell them. I don’t agree with this (re-selling) culture but it’s the norms now,”

Speaking of spoilers, widespread leaks of the film were reportedly circulating online last week. Social media users reported running into spoilers left in comment threads. There were also reports that the film’s final scene was filmed and had been shared online.

Infinity War and Endgame directors, the Russo brothers spoke to Box Office Pro, who asked them if they were paranoid about plot leaks for Endgame.

“Yeah, we do feel that way. At a certain point, I’m sure we’ll write another letter this year that asks everyone to stay off the internet.

“I think this one has even more spoilers than the last one. This is a culture that wants everything now, and it’s getting worse. The world is connected via social media, and information travels within seconds.

“If you’ve been following along with this narrative for 10 years, you’re going to want to protect yourself. It’s best to go in clean.

“I encourage people to go opening weekend because I’m sure everything is going to hit the internet the moment the movie hits the screen.”

And write a letter they did..

We Malaysians have just a couple of hours before the first screening of the film on our shores. So, till then, tread carefully out there guys. And after you watch it, remember…Thanos demands your silence.

Survey: One In Four Girls In Malaysia Are Sexually Assaulted Before Their 18th Birthday

Is your child being groomed right in front of you?

Research has shown that in Malaysia, one in every four girls will experience some form of sexual assault before their 18th birthday. While for boys, the number is one in every six.

Director of the Department of Family Development in the Health Ministry, Dr Faridah Abu Bakar said the statistics include the following numbers of reported cases:

Child rape: 13,272

Child molestation: 6,014

Incest with a child: 1,796

Unnatural sexual acts with a child: 1,152

“If you take a good look at the cases, you’ll find that the sexual predators are very friendly with children, this is because they are grooming the children, making the child trust them and become influenced by them.

That is why, in these type of cases, we as parents need to teach our children boundaries. If an adult is very close with our children, such as an uncle for example, teach them what boundaries need to be maintained for that kind of relationship.”

While there’s no “typical sexual predator”, listed below are things we as parents can do to recognize predatorial behavior.

7 Signs of Grooming.

Image via Danny Hurley

1. Paying special attention to a child and making him or her feel special.

They will get to know the child’s likes and dislikes very well and will try to win over the affection of their victim by sharing these likes.

2. Isolating your child by involving him or her in activities that require them to be alone together.

Part of the manipulation process is breaking down the child’s barriers. An adult who invites your child to sleep over at his or her house alone should raise a red-flag warning to you.

3. Touching your child in your presence so that your child thinks that you are comfortable with the touching.

The act might be as simple as putting their arm around your child’s shoulder or asking them for a hug goodbye. Be aware of your child’s reactions. Does your child seem uncomfortable? Never force your children to show affection to anyone they are uncomfortable with. This teaches them that forced physical contact is okay.

4. Taking advantage of a child’s natural curiosity about sex by telling them “dirty” jokes, showing them pornography or by playing sexual games.

If your child starts to suddenly talk about sex and things related to it, this may be a sign that he or she is being groomed. Be aware of physical signs as well, if your toddler is touching themselves or others inappropriately, this may be a sign that there is a problem.

5. Offering to play games or buy treats for young children

After a while, the predator may ask for “something” in return. This “something” may be a sexual act or forcing the child to watch pornographic material.

6. Becoming “close friends” or “a listening ear” to your child when your child has a fight with you or with their friends.

Predators often target kids who feel isolated from their friends. Children of single parent homes are frequently victimized because they are seen as being vulnerable. Male predators have been known to seek out single mothers to gain access to their children.

7. Eventually treating the child victim as being involved and at fault for their “relationship”

The predator may threaten your child saying you would be angry at “both of them” if you found out what happened. This aims to reduce the likelihood that someone might find out about the sexual abuse.

The statistics and signs can be overwhelming. But parents are the ones most likely to spot abuse if they pay close attention to their children and the people close to them.

Three churches and four hotels in Sri Lanka were attacked on Easter Sunday, leaving an estimated 290 people dead and 450 wounded.

The eight explosions, some of which were reportedly suicide bomb attacks, is one of the only major attacks to hit Sri Lanka since the end of the civil war 10 years ago.

Image via NST

Since the attack, the Sri Lankan government has declared a curfew and blocked major social media networks in the country, including Facebook and Whatsapp, to prevent misinformation and rumours from circulating.

Politicians and religious leaders stand united in their shock and condemnation of the attacks. Here are some of their reactions.

Pope Francis

“I learned with sadness and pain of the news of the grave attacks, that precisely today, Easter, brought mourning and pain to churches and other places where people were gathered in Sri Lanka,” he told tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square to hear his Easter Sunday message.

I wish to express my affectionate closeness to the Christian community, hit while it was gathered in prayer, and to all the victims of such cruel violence.”

“New Zealand condemns all acts of terrorism, and our resolve has only been strengthened by the attack on our soil on the 15th of March. To see an attack in Sri Lanka while people were in churches and at hotels is devastating,” she said in a written statement.

“New Zealand rejects all forms of extremism and stands for freedom of religion and the right to worship safely. Collectively we must find the will and the answers to end such violence.”

His Majesty strongly condemns the perpetrators involved in the blasts and is profoundly saddened by the devastating loss of life and injuries,” said a statement from Istana Negara issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.

“His Majesty also expresses his condolences and utmost sympathy for the victims of the “senseless and barbaric crime” and is saddened that innocent people were targeted during a time of prayer and celebration.”

“His Majesty The Yang di-Pertuan Agong conveys Malaysia’s support and solidarity to the victims, their families and the people of Sri Lanka.”

Seven people have reportedly been arrested in a raid on a house in Colombo in relation to the attacks, during which three police officers were killed. Further details on the raid have not yet been made available.

Currently, Malaysia is one of the many countries whose citizens tak payah apply for a visa if they will be visiting New Zealand for less than 3 months. However, starting 1 October 2019, Malaysians will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) and pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) before travelling to the country.

Image via Half This World Away

The ETA and IVL is New Zealand’s effort to conserve the natural environment of the country, by requiring tourists to directly contribute to the tourism infrastructure they use and help protect and enhance the natural environment they will enjoy during their stay in New Zealand.

The ETA and IVL applies only to citizens from a visa waiver countries, such as the USA, UK Canada, Singapore, Germany, and also Malaysia.

Here’s what you need to know about the ETA.

1. ETA Requirement Tu Starting 1 October 2019

You will need to apply for the ETA and pay the IVL if you plan on visiting New Zealand any time after 30 September 2019.

Image via Half This World Away

2. Even If You Pergi NZ On Transit Je, You Still Have To Apply.

You’ll need to apply for the ETA if you are a Malaysian visiting New Zealand, or if you are a Malaysian transiting in New Zealand, or, if you are a passenger of a cruise ship entering New Zealand.

Image via Half This World Away

3. You Takpayah Apply If You Already Have A Valid Visa

You don’t need to apply for the ETA if you already have a valid New Zealand visa or if you are a permanent resident of New Zealand.

Image via Half This World Away

4. Cost Of The ETA Varies Depending On Dekat Mana You Submit Your Request

The ETA costs:

  • RM 24.83 (NZD$ 9) for requests submitted via their mobile app
  • RM 33.10 (NZD$ 12) for requests using the website form

The IVL costs RM 96.55 (NZD$ 35) for each person and is charged together with the ETA. So, in total, you’ll be paying at most RM 129.65 (NZD$ 47) per person.

Yes, it’s quite mahal. But the good news is that the ETA and IVL are valid for multiple visits and for up to 2 years.

Image via Half This World Away

5. You Should Apply 72 Hours Sebelum Your Travel Date

The ETA requires up to 72 hours of processing, so it’s a good idea to apply for it three days prior to the day you plan to travel, just to be safe.

Even though most ETA’s only take a couple of hours to be approved, airport security won’t allow you to board the plane without an approval.

Also, if you are travelling on an ETA, you’ll need to be able to show airport security that you will be leaving the country within 3 months of your arrival date with a departure ticket.

Image via Half This World Away

BTW, if you plan on doing one of those working holidays or if your stay in New Zealand will exceed 3 months, you can’t do that on an ETA, instead, you’ll need to apply for a visa. You can get more information on that, here. Happy travelling, folks!

A study has confirmed that the Sumatran rhinoceros is effectively extinct in the Sabahan wilderness.

The study was conducted in Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Lahad Datu as well as in Ulu Malua Forest Reserve as these locations were previously identified to have a population of Sumatran rhinos.

According to The Star, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew, said during the Sabah state assembly sitting that the ongoing study started in 1978 and is being carried out by the ministry in collaboration with Borneo Rhino Alliance and the World Wide Fund Nature (WWF) Malaysia.

Methods used to detect the animals was forest explorations and camera traps.

“However, these studies did not find any footprints of the Sumatran rhinoceros or record any photographs of them.

This means that these areas no longer have a population of the Sumatran rhinoceros,”

Previously, it was reported that only three Sumatran rhinos were left in captivity in Sabah, with none left in the wild. The three rhinos were made up of two females called Puntung and Iman, and a male named Tam.

However, Puntung was put to sleep in 2017 after she was found to be dying from skin cancer. Iman was reported to be receiving treatment last year for bleeding in her uterus. There have been attempts to encourage breeding between her and Tam in the past, though the attempts have so far been unsuccessful. And it is feared that if her condition does not improve, then hopes of saving this species will be lost forever.

First It Was Bomba’s “Fireproof” Suits, Now Their Fire Trucks Are Breaking Down

Published

Facing life-threatening situations is part and parcel of being a firefighter. These are the people who keep us and our property safe from fires, assist us during natural disasters, save us from unwanted reptilian visitors in our homes and hold search and rescue operations when we are missing. The least we can do is make sure their equipment is in good working order for them to do their job.

However, a recent Harian Metro exclusive revealed that almost 40 per cent of Bomba’s fire trucks, aka Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT) dah rosak and takboleh pakai. According to the source who spoke to Harian Metro, the vehicles drive shafts or power take off (PTO) keep breaking down leaving almost half of their nationwide fleet completely unusable.

Image via Harian Metro

The faulty vehicles were part of 242 FRTs purchased in 2007, 2010 and 2014 for RM420 million from a local supply company who was contracted by the government via a closed tender process.

“Unfortunately, for the last three years, the vehicles have started to break down, with the main damage happening at the drive shaft or PTO resulting in the vehicle being abandoned”

Image via Harian Metro

The Selangor based company reportedly failed to provide adequate design and installation of required parts for the vehicles according to specifications. And this is believed to be the main reason why the FRTs keep breaking down. FYI, the unusable FRTs are worth a total of RM165 million.

The source noted that a basic FRT in good condition costs only about RM1.5 million per unit. Yet, the FRTs purchased were bought for up to RM1.86 million per unit from the local supplier. The source pointed out that although the government paid a high price for the vehicles, they still broke down frequently and he is sure it’s only a matter of time until the rest become unusable too.

Image via Wikimedia

Currently, the unusable FRTs have been left to rot at the several Bomba garages nationwide, including in Section 15, Shah Alam, Serdang and Salak Tinggi.

Based on the report, the process for purchasing vehicles for Bomba was done via open tender prior to 2007. And so, the vehicles received then were in good condition.  FRTs should be operative for at least 15 years, yet the ones currently being used by Bomba barely made it through 10 years of use.

This news comes after MACC’s investigation into the materials used for Bomba’s “fire-proof” suits worth RM13.5 million which were reported to be made of flammable materials.

MACC sent a sample of the suit to the Department of Chemistry who confirmed that the materials used to make the suits did not adhere to the standard set by Bomba. According to a statement by MACC, the investigation into the “fire-proof” suits is in its final stages.

This Is Why The Notre-Dame Cathedral Fire Is Such A Devastating Loss

Published

By

A massive fire destroyed significant parts of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on the 16th of April.

While most of the main structure remain intact, the fire burned for several hours, destroying the cathedral’s iconic spire and roof before firefighters contained the blaze.

This shocked many Parisians, tourists and people all over the world, and it is still unclear as to what caused the fire.

But for those who are only familiar with the cathedral thanks to Disney animation ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, let’s look at a few facts about the iconic Parisian structure to appreciate it a little more.

via GIPHY

THE SPIRE WAS A SPIRITUAL LIGHTNING ROD

In the aftermath of the fire, you might have seen videos of the long rod on the cathedral topple down amid a blaze.

That was the spire!

The spire also had an adorable little rooster on top of it (which you can see in the picture above!), which is said to be a piece with three relics secured in the metal bird’s body.

This includes a possible piece of the Crown of Thorns acquired by the church in 1239, and relics from Saint Denis and Saint Genevieve.

This rod is said to have been a ‘spiritual lightning rod’ to protect the parishioners within.

AN OLD TEMPLE LIKELY LIES BELOW THE CATHEDRAL

Image via TripSavvy

There was once a Gallo-Roman city known as Lutetia underneath the current area of Notre Dame, Paris. The cathedral may have been built right over a temple, as during an excavation, pieces of a sculpted altar dedicated to Jupiter and other deities were found.

NAPOLEON WAS CORONATED AS EMPEROR THERE

Image via Twitter

Napoléon Bonaparte decided to have his 1804 coronation as emperor in Notre-Dame, but the cathedral was in bad shape due to decay and vandalism.

The French statesman and military leader then declared its return to church use, returned it to its former glory, and hosted his grand ceremony within its walls.

This was also an event in which he famously crowned himself.

VICTOR HUGO ALSO HELPED SAVE THE BUILDING

Image via elsiglo.mx

Author Victor Hugo used the cathedral as a personification of France itself in his 1831 novel ‘Notre-Dame de Paris’, the book that inspired the Disney film ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’.

In the book, the hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo is NOT the main character.

His published story was a success, and it led to a major restoration of the building overseen by architects Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

IT TOOK 100 YEARS TO COMPLETE

Image via Histolines

The cathedral started construction in the 12th century when Maurice de Sully became bishop of Paris. It was also during the reign of King Louis VII.

100 years later, when it finally got completed, Henry VI of England was crowned as the King of France there.

IT IS HOME TO HISTORICAL AND BIBLICAL ARTEFACTS

Image via 10tv

The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris is home to various artifacts, artwork and relics collected over the centuries, including what is believed to be the Crown of Thorns itself (pictured above), the original Great Organ dating back to medieval times, and the Rose Windows which are stained-glass windows that date back to the 13th century.

There are also sculptures, statues and paintings inside the cathedral that depict Biblical scenes and saints.

Thankfully, it’s been reported that all of the artefacts and artwork inside the cathedral have been saved from the fire.

Concerned About Missing Children? Here’s How You Can Have NUR Alerts Sent Straight To Your Phone

Published

on

By

Image via NST

NUR (National Urgent Response) Alert is a government initiative started by PDRM to ensure children aged 12 years and below receive protection from exploitation, violence and neglect.

To assist this initiative, Malaysian telco companies have decided to send out NUR Alerts to their users to help inform the public of any missing children.

However, your telco company will not send the alert to you without prior approval. If you subscribe to NUR Alerts, the announcements will be made via MMS sent free of charge to your mobile phone. The message will typically contain an image of the child and further information about their case.

Receiving NUR Alerts can prevent injury and save the lives of abducted and missing children. NUR Alerts can also serve as deterrents to those who would prey upon our children, as some perpetrators may release the abducted child once they find out the public is aware of the crime and the missing child.

Approving NUR Alerts to your phone is an easy single step procedure, here’s all you need to do:

Image via MCMC

Yesterday, a NUR Alert for an eight-year-old boy was posted on the PDRM website. Muhammad Zahiruddin Putra left his house at Pangsapuri Seri Dahlia in Bandar Seri Putra Bangi at 8am on Monday (15 April) to play with his friend.

His mother, Sainih Sunding only realized that Zahiruddin was missing after coming home from work that evening.

“I asked my third eldest child about Zahir and he told me Zahir was playing with a friend nearby.

We tried looking for Zahir around the neighbourhood but to no avail. A neighbour said he saw Zahir going to a shop at noon yesterday and in the evening, another neighbour saw him playing in the neighbourhood. That was the last time he was seen.

He was wearing a black t-shirt and a pair of blue pants. I am worried for his safety because he has not done this before (not coming home).”

If you have seen Zahiruddin or have any information on his whereabouts, do contact the nearest police station. Let’s hope we find this child soon!
