Here’s The Lowdown For Proton’s First SUV, The X70

Proton launched their first SUV, the X70, last week and we managed to score invites to the event. Whether you’ve been considering buying the car or not, we bet you’re curious about what the hype is all about, right? Well, here are the full specs of Proton’s newest addition, in all it’s glory.

1. Under The Hood

The X70 has a 1.8 litre four-cylinder TGDi engine capable of producing 135kW of power and 285Nm of torque for a powerful yet efficient drive.

Power is transferred to the road via either front wheels or all wheels, depending on the X70 model, through a six-speed auto transmission. With the Manual Mode, the X70 allows you to switch smoothly from normal to eco and sport driving modes to fit your driving style.

A simple and convenient feature that frees up the centre console is the X70’s electric parking brake and auto brake hold button. It safely retains brake pressure when stopping at a traffic light or in heavy traffic. Release the brakes by just depressing the accelerator pedal.

2. Malayan Tiger Exterior

The X70’s sleek silhouette is inspired by the Malayan tiger in full motion, represented by the vehicle’s strong shoulder in front with flowing lines to the back.

The front grill has interlocking patterns inspired by traditional Malaysian woodcarving designs.

Standard exterior equipment includes automatic headlights, LED front fog lights, LED rear combination lights, and rear diffuser with dual exhaust outlets.

Upper variants come with LED projector headlights with daytime running lights which increases visibility in all weather conditions, while standard 2WD variants get halogen units.

Wheels selection starts from 17, 18 and 19-inch stylish yet solid alloys.

3. Luxurious And Comfortable Interior

Moving inside, the X70 comes equipped with a leather steering wheel and a 7” HD LCD meter combination.

Unique to the Premium 2WD model are the soft and plush Nappa leather seats. The Executive variants carry black leatherette seats while the standard variants get black fabric seats.

The driver seat comes with 6+2 way adjustment while front passenger seat offers 4-way adjustment, both via power adjustment “Boss” switches. The rear seats fold in a 60:40 split configuration.

The X70 also has a larger-than-average sunroof, dual zone air-con and a built-in purifier system to filter out harmful gases, remove bad odour and kill bacteria.

4. Malaysian-ised Infotainment System

Control the entire infotainment system (plus the sunroof) via X70’s Artificial Intelligent Voice Command System, using the “Hi Proton” prompt. Or, use the 8” touchscreen if you don’t feel like talking.

The impressive infotainment system comes with online music streaming, online navigation as well as Bluetooth connectivity and Android mirror-link for your smartphone. The X70 has 9 speakers with power amplifiers and subwoofers for a power-packed, surround sound entertainment experience, and six USB ports, enough for every passenger to charge their phone.

There’s also a Proton Link App to monitor and control specific functions remotely, such as double (or triple) checking that you locked your car.

5. Long List Of Safety Features

All variants of the X70 are equipped with six airbags, ISOFIX for child car seats, ABS, ESC, Hill Hold Assist (HHA) which prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards or forwards on a hill slope when starting from a stationary position, Hill Descent Control (HDC) which maintains downhill speed without the driver having to continuously adjust the speed via braking or accelerating.

The Standard 2WD model has a reverse camera while the other models carry a 360 camera.

Besides that, the Premium 2WD X70 also has:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) which applies the brakes automatically to avoid a potential frontal collision.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) which alerts of a possible impending collision with a slower vehicle in front
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) which alerts the driver if the vehicle drifts out of the lane unintentionally
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) that monitors blind spots and alerts the driver when vehicles are nearby
  • Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC) where the headlamps adapt to driving situations automatically by switching between high and low beams
  • Door Opening Warning System (DOW) which senses potential danger when the front door is about to open
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which maintains a safe distance with the vehicle in front when cruise control in operation
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

So many safety features right?! If you didn’t catch all of that, you can watch a run down of these safety features in the video below.

Prices for the Proton X70 start at RM99,800 to RM123,800.
