We will have a new Agong by the end of the month!

The Conference of Rulers announced that the new Agong will be selected on January 24th, before taking the oath of office on January 31st.

The selection will be done by way of a majority ballot among the nine Malay Rulers, with five votes required for a Ruler to become the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

It follows the decision by Sultan Muhammad V to step down as Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Sunday.

The Kelantan ruler had only served two years of his five-year term, and offered no reason for stepping down.

He is the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Malaysia’s history to resign.

Meanwhile, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah will continue his duties as the acting Agong, until the next Agong and his deputy are elected.
