What’s Better Than Durian? Roasted Durian.

Over time, we’ve seen durian ice cream, durian crepes, durian puffs, durian candy, durian cendol and even durian cakes! But that wasn’t enough for Dennis Chan, a fruit seller at the Jalan Gaya Food Night Market, also known as Api-Api Food Market in Kota Kinabalu. He wanted to sell something new and innovative.

He took the world of durian up a notch by inventing a new delicacy that’s heavily favoured by locals as well as tourists from China and South Korea. What is this new invention? The Roasted Durian!

Yes, roasted durian.

Dennis said that the idea of roasted durian came from the roasted young coconuts sold in Jalan Sepanggar, Menggatal.

For the king of fruit to be transformed into the delicious roasted delicacy is not an easy process. It can take up to 45 minutes to prepare! The durians are wrapped in aluminum and roasted over a charcoal fire. The roasted durians are then sold at RM60 each and can be eaten once it cools down.

People on the internet have been going back and forth on the subject of roasted durian. Some are willing to give a try but others are questioning why such a thing exists.

If you’re curious to know how it tastes like, you can go to the market from 6 pm until 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays! Let us know if you enjoy it!
