Today marks 12 years since George Town, Penang was granted World Heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
In recognition of the designation, the Penang government has declared July 7th as George Town World Heritage Day, making it an official public holiday in the state.
Fun fact: UNESCO also recognised Melaka on the same day, but the city celebrates its milestone on April 15th each year.

For obvious reasons, Penang will not be having any celebrations this year.
However, the preservation of this historic city will not be sidelined.
George Town World Heritage Incorporated, a state heritage agency, has announced a RM1 million allocation to help Penang's cultural heritage sector's transition to the "new normal".
The initiative will not only be used for maintenance works on the city’s heritage premises, but it will also assist local businesses in digital marketing promotion, with priority given to those who have yet to develop their digital marketing strategy.

George Town is well-known for its cultural heritage, colonial influences and historic landscape, but it’s important to remember Penangites' continuous hard work that put the city on the map.
Today, we recognise all heritage activists, town planners, architects and the state and federal authorities who help Penang maintain its rich history.
Happy George Town World Heritage Day to all Penangites!
